Wat Chalong: A Symbol of Faith and Beauty in Phuket

Wat Chalong, or Wat Chaiyathararam, is the largest and most revered temple in Phuket, located in Chalong Subdistrict, Mueang Phuket District. This temple is not only a religious center but also a popular tourist destination for those visiting Phuket.

History and Significance

Wat Chalong was built in the early 19th century and was renamed "Wat Chaiyathararam" during the reign of King Rama V. The temple holds historical and religious significance, particularly due to the involvement of Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang in helping the people of Phuket fight against the Chinese rebels in 1876. Luang Pho Chaem is highly revered for his healing abilities and spiritual power. Additionally, he was skilled in traditional herbal medicine, which contributed to the temple's widespread recognition.

Luang Pho Chaem: A Key Figure of Wat Chalong Luang ,Pho Chaem was born in Bo Saen Subdistrict, Thap Put District, Phang Nga Province, in the year of the monkey, 1810, during the reign of King Rama III. He was trained by Phra Tha and became the abbot of Wat Chalong at the age of 23. Luang Pho Chaem was an expert in Vipassana meditation and possessed spiritual authority.

Role in Suppressing the Chinese Rebellion

In 1876, Luang Pho Chaem played a crucial role in helping the people of Phuket fight against the Chinese rebels by distributing sacred cloths to protect the villagers, which led to their victory. His actions were highly praised and revered.

Expertise in Healing

Luang Pho Chaem was also renowned for his expertise in traditional herbal medicine and was recognized as a traditional doctor. He was famous for treating difficult-to-cure diseases, and many people sought his medical advice.

Architecture and Places of Interest

Wat Chalong features beautiful architecture, with a 60-meter-tall stupa that houses sacred relics from Sri Lanka. The temple is decorated with beautiful murals and statues donated by devotees. Visitors can climb the stupa to enjoy the panoramic view of the temple and its surroundings. Additionally, there is a beautifully decorated ordination hall used for religious ceremonies.
